Facebook and Pidgin

If like me you have a Facebook account and have some friends who use the Facebook chat application you can get a plugin for pidgin which will allow you to communicate with them without having to visit the Facebook website.

The following instructions are for openSUSE but can be tweaked for you flavour of Linux.

Download from here http://code.google.com/p/pidgin-facebookchat/downloads/list

facebook_icons.zip
pidgin-facebookchat-1.61.tar.bz2

As root extract the facebook_icons.zip to /usr/share/pixmaps/pidgin/protocols

As root extract pidgin-facebookchat-1.61.tar.bz2 to some place (Extract here) this will extract a folder called /usr inside that will be;

/lib /lib64 /local /share

Inside /lib will be a folder called /purple-2 and inside that will be libfacebook.so
copy the libfacebook.so file to /usr/lib/purple-2/ on your system.
You may also need to install libjson-glib from Yast as well.

Restart pidgin then do the following.
# Add a new account to Pidgin (Accounts->Manage Accounts->Add)
# Choose “Facebook” from the dropdown list
# Use your Facebook email address in the username field
# Start chatting
