irssi walk through

Here is my walk through for setting up irssi these are my preferences such as scripts, themes etc. You will want to create your own setup, however the majority of steps here will work for you with just some name changes as required. I will assume you have installed irssi already all of the instructions below should be done as a  *normal user* not root. I will also assume you have registered your ‘nick’ although this is not required unless you wish to use private messages and other OP options.

$ irssi

Setup your preferences

/set nick your_nick

/set real_name Your Name

/network add -nick your_nick Freenode

/server add -auto -network Freenode irc.freenode.net

/channel add -auto #tdtrs Freenode

/network add -autosendcmd /msg nickserv identify yourpassword;wait 2000″ Freenode

You might like to change the theme of irssi, if not skip to “Now make a couple of folders”

$ cd ~/.irssi

$ wget http://www.irssi.org/themefiles/evolution.theme

/set theme

evolution.theme

Now make a couple of folders in /home/yourfoldername/.irssi/

$ mkdir ~/.irssi/scripts

$ mkdir ~/.irssi/scripts/autorun

You might like to download some scripts

$ cd ~/.irssi/scripts/autorun

$ wget http://anti.teamidiot.de/static/nei/*/Code/Irssi/adv_windowlist.pl

$ wget http://scripts.irssi.org/scripts/autorealname.pl

$ wget http://scripts.irssi.org/scripts/scriptassist.pl

$ wget http://scripts.irssi.org/scripts/spellcheck.pl

Lets load our scripts

/script load autorun/adv_windowlist.pl

/script load autorun/autorealname.pl

/script load autorun/scriptsassist.pl

/script load autorun/aspeller.pl

Now you are ready to connect.

/connect Freenode

Next time you start irssi it will automatically connect to Freenode and the #tdtrs channel (Or the channel of your choice)

gpodder

You know I’ve used gpodder a few times now and I have to say I’m pretty impressed with it, the thing is its so easy to use if its the first time you’ve used gpodder you’ll be asked to select your subscription simply tick the podcast you want and away you go.

For me the outstanding feature is the ‘podcast list’ thats already included in the application, how many times have you been asked “Whats a good podcast?” most of the time what your really being asked is “Do you know of any others?”.

Rather than going to Podcast Alley to trawl through the list of whats available a simple scroll through the Top Podcasts will give you a wide choice to select from.
